Q. Why does it interest you as a performer to play men?

A. I’m basically interested in identity, and I still find fascinating the question, “How do we identify ourselves, and how do we settle into other people’s expectations for our identity?” This is not only true in stories like “Orlando,” who spends the first half of his life as a boy and then becomes a woman, and, even though he’s the same soul, there are all these different projections on him because he’s now a woman. But even in a story about a suburban mother, like “The Deep End,” you have an idea of yourself based on living your life, and then you feel something else coming up in you. Like you’re quite used to being a soccer mom living in Lake Tahoe with a husband who is mostly absent, and then maybe you fall in love with a gambler. The moment when one realizes one might not be fixed, that one’s story might not be over. This is the transformation we all go through all the time.

You’ve been with Tilda Swinton as her “styling collaborator” for many years now and from what we read you’re also a huge fan of David Bowie. How do they as individuals inspire you and how were you able to leverage that inspiration for styling Bowie’s video The Stars (Are Out Tonight)?

I knew Tilda in London in the late 80s where she had been working for some years with directors and artists like Derek Jarman, John Maybury and Cerith Wynn Evans. This was a group of individuals and friends born of the punk generation – (Jarman was a little older but naturally very much empathized and gravitated toward that movement), from which then evolved the Billys and Blitz club scenes in the late seventies, whose central musical and style reference was David Bowie.

I was a French graduate student in London at this time, and so divided my own time between the lecture hall and the dance floor, between an 18th century philosophical Enlightenment and my own twentieth century sexual enlightenment. I had been brought up in Bromley in Kent, (a stones throw away from Beckenham from whence Bowie hailed ), a town infamous also for its eponymous punk contingent. He was part of my cultural DNA, a constant presence from the age of 9 ( ‘Starman’ ), I saw Bowie live for the first time at the Empire Pool Wembly in 1976 performing the Station to Station tour. The concert began with Dali’s ‘Un Chien Andalou’ and segued into a light show worthy of Murnau before an ecstatic audience of punks, fags, and felons.

I was brought up on a diet of glam, punk, and ‘cursed poets’, of transgression, transgender, and transformation, all of which have also been important loci of interest in Tilda’s performance and cinema work over the years. When I started to collaborate with Tilda, the first time being on an image with the French photographic duo Pierre and Gilles in 1996, those themes were always at the core of our work. Whether it’s choosing a designer to wear for a red carpet event or in a photographic project, we have always striven for a lateral approach, one which prioritizes process and play over surface and appearance. We had already explored Bowie’s own interests in mask and identity in many of our shoots, riffing on the way with gender blurring avatars like French artist Claude Cahun or Japanese bhutto performer Kazuo Ohno, so then working on the video seemed like the very natural (but extremely propitious) collision between several force fields, whose magnetic influence was ineluctable.
